related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so

romney on the issue of domestic policies at that first presidential debate, he's going to be going after the president on foreign policy at that speech at the virginia military institute here in lexington later on this morning. and the campaign did release some excerpts from the speech that we could look at to sort of see where he might be going with this address later on this morning. a few things to point out, carol. he's going to be going after the president as you mentioned just a few moments ago on those diplomatic attacks in benghazi, libya. he's going to be talking about that attack as the work of al qaeda, saying that that was likely the work of the same forces that attacked the united states on september 11th. now, a few other things he's going to be talking about. he's going to be calling for new sanctions, stronger sanctions against the government in iran to prevent that country from developing nuclear weapons. he's also going to be talking about arming the syrian rebels. lastly, carol, as part of his remarks that were releasted by the campaign, interesting to note that he is

some significant differences. host: we heard a bit in the debate last week about where mitt romney stands on his tax plan. here is a headline coming to us. in the fog of numbers, there is little tax clarity from obama and romney. $5 trillion, whether or not tax cuts will equal $5 trillion. there is a difference in this number. guest: the $5 trillion is the gross cost of reducing rates 20% across the board. the. gov. romney made is it is unfair to call it a tax cut because he intends to offset the cost through base broadening. i think one thing that was interesting is although gov. romney has proposed 20%, he did not actually mentioned that number in the debate. i think what he did emphasize instead is he was not going to add to the deficit or increase taxes on the middle class. analyses has been done that shows it is a little bit difficult to keep those while cutting the rate by 20%. the decision not to mention the 20% number suggests that is where he will likely adjust his plan. he will stick with this plan of not raising taxes on the middle- class or adding to the deficit. host:

-- the mitt romney campaign in particular has said in the last few days that during the debates, they will fact check lies. in which sometimes can mean saying something is not true when it is true or sang something is true when it is not true. i think that because the speed has increased, there is a lot more for reporters to do. about money issues and spending in keeping an eye on that. i think there are some great works being done tracking spending but there's also a lot more money on the table because it is citizens united. that is a real challenge. in some ways to bring the optimism and pessimism together about this, i think this might be the election cycle where both sides, it has become clear what the tool or for both sides. there is money, there is media access, there is social media. there are ways to quickly get information out and really ask questions. in the last few weeks before people vote, we are going to see how well each side uses those tools. although i do not know we will fully realize that until the next election cycle. until the next election cycle. when i tal

, that is a surprise because economists were expecting unemployment to pick up. president obama and mitt romney will both be campaigning in virginia this morning, the obama campaign took a hit with his debate performance this weeks this will give him something to crow about today. the romney campaign, mitt romney issued a statement saying this is not what a real recovery looks like. he goes on the say, the real unemployment rate is closer to 11% if you count the people who stopped looking for work. there is also a lot of speculation on line on social media this morning, that the obama administration could be fudging the numbers. we took that question right to the secretary of labor this morning. she tells us it's ludicrous to say the numbers could be manipulated. >>> secret service has new policies in place after one of the most embarrassing scandals in the history. it would ban excessive drinking and the share of work related information on sites including facebook. this comes five months after more than a dozen employees of the secret service were accused of drunken partying with prostitutes
